Inspiration Never Waits in One Place: A Creative Journey with Jennifer Cody Epstein, a Novelist in Motion

Where is the homeland? For many people today, it is no longer a single address, but a collection of places that shape who we become. Jennifer Cody Epstein's story is a reflection of that journey—not simply across places, but through history, curiosity, and creativity in motion.

Jennifer never believed that stories belong to a single place.

As a journalist-turned-novelist, she has spent decades living and working across cities including Tokyo, Hong Kong, Bangkok, Barcelona, and New York. Each place has shaped not only the way she lives, but also the way she researches, observes, and tells stories.

Her work weaves the factual with the fictional—combining real moments of history with imagined repercussions, and real places and people with imagined passions, pains, and inner lives.

Each Place Holds a Story

Her first novel, sparked by a Pan Yuliang self-portrait in New York's Guggenheim Museum, led her on a ten-year odyssey reimagining the artist's resilience and courage, drawing deeply on both her extraordinary body of work and her time in Shanghai, Hong Kong, and Paris.

In Paris, she discovered the storied Salpêtrière hospital, with its haunting history of exploiting young women's "hysteria" for the personal gain of powerful men like Jean-Martin Charcot and Sigmund Freud.

She also spent five years exploring Berlin of the 1930s through the lens of a doomed friendship as the city spiraled from Weimar decadence to Nazi brutality, and another five exploring the fraught legacies of wartime colonialism and chauvinism in 1940s Harbin and Tokyo.

For Jennifer, every city is more than a setting. It is a place to listen, to question, and to uncover the stories that history leaves behind.

Creation Lives in Motion

Years of living and writing across different cities have shaped not only the stories she tells, but also the way she creates.

"They've taught me that inspiration can't be scheduled or sought from a desk," she says. "For me, it appears in moments of movement."

She is always observing and collecting the fragments that might otherwise disappear—studying faces on a crowded subway or city sidewalk for future characters, or wandering through quiet backstreets and park pathways in search of settings that may one day find their way into a novel.

Many of those observations remain with her long after the moment has passed, gradually taking on new meaning as a story begins to unfold.

Power From Anywhere

In short, writing for her means not only traveling, but traveling as lightly as possible: a backpack, a notebook, a laptop, a phone. And these days, almost always, a PicoGo power bank to make sure her ideas keep flowing wherever the creative journey takes her.

Some days begin in a neighborhood café before she heads out to explore the city, photographing overlooked details, recording voice notes, and collecting moments that may one day become part of a novel.

Other days take her farther—a train ride to another city, weeks spent researching in unfamiliar places, or long hours moving between museums, libraries, and quiet streets.

Through it all, PicoGo quietly became part of the routine. That means her attention stays where it belongs—on observing, researching, and writing. This kind of momentum is essentially a state of uninterrupted continuity. And for a writer on the move, that continuity is a rhythm that needs to be protected.

A Life Without Borders

Over the years, Jennifer has immersed herself in different cities, cultures, and histories—not simply to experience new places, but to understand how people are shaped by them. Every city has offered a different lens through which to see the world, asking new questions and revealing stories she could never have imagined before arriving.

She doesn't believe life should be defined by a single place or a single identity. Every place leaves something behind—a different perspective, a new question, another way of understanding both history and herself.

So for her, writing has never been about waiting for inspiration to come. It's about staying curious long enough for a place to reveal itself—and carrying what it teaches into the stories that follow.
